Chartered Accountancy as Career
(NOTE: This post is purely my personal opinion, and in not any way related to any opinion expressed by any person or organization or any legal body)
Being a student of Chartered Accountancy (CA) course I should say that I am into one of the prestigious profession. But when i interact with a common or layman it has been difficult to make them understand what this course is about. You say to them i am a engineer / doctor, pat they understand that this profession is about something from science field. CA course is still lagging behind all other professions because of its inherent limitations:
1. CA institute which is an autonomous body similar to that of IIM or IIT formed by a special law restricts itself from advertising. Even a practising CA can’t advertise about his practice or approach clients because it contravenes his professional ethics framed by CA institute. But in the recent past amendments were made to enable practising CA’s to advertise in a limited manner. Thanks to the globalisation, competitive markets and FDI’s.
2. Indians are different in conception. Here the idea is stereotype i.e. all are going by this way, let me follow this. When a child is out from his 10th class, he will be going straight into science stream even without knowing the pros & cons of that field. Ask him why, the reply is i want to be a engineer/ doctor. Or if a child is weak in some of the science subjects he opts for Arts as a Career, and last enters the Commerce field. This trend has to be changed.
3. Parents have a pivotal role to play in this matter. They should recognise the interests of their children and guide them to choose their career, but not to pressurise their ambitions on their children.
4. There is a misconception that the pass percentage in CA is very less. The idea is absolutely misguided. The pass percentage is derived considering candidates passed in both the groups in one attempt all over India. So candidates appearing both groups and passing them may be less but alternatively they may pass in one group at a time and the next group in next attempt, which is never taken into account. Let’s take a instance:
Suppose 100 candidates appear in an attempt of exam. Out of them 40 appear for both groups, 50 appear in any single group, and 10 don’t appear all subjects. So out of 40 appearing both groups only 10 pass both group, 25 clear any one group and 5 don’t clear any. Out of 50 giving any one group 40 pass out.
From above we derive: both groups pass out = 10,
Single group pass out = 65,
No pass out = 15,
Miscellaneous (some subjects exempted) = 10.
From above numbers pass % = 10/100 x 100 = 10% (seems very less isn’t it)
But the real picture is pupil really passing is 85/100 x 100 = 85%.
Here 85 is the result of 10+65+10.
Hope i have made clear the misconception.
5. The course duration is long, is another misconception. Everything depends on the calibre of the candidate. He has to be discipline enough to do hard work. Institute puts no restriction on number of attempts a person can appear in a exam of CA. So it solely depends on the candidate if he clears both groups in one attempt or more. Depending on this the duration of the course increases. But i agree with the duration for articleship (working as apprentice under a practising CA) being very long i.e. 3 years or 3 ½ years as the case may be. No other profession has such a long period for apprentice. My personal opinion is it should be reduced to less than 2 years because some candidates tend to be impatient or lose their interest in studies. Moreover a candidate gets less time to attend classes and prepare for final exam while attending office. This is because all persons are not alike (all fingers are not same in a hand) in being disciplined or concentrated.
Or else the old mode of curriculum (course structure before November 2002) should be implemented in which a candidate is allowed to appear exam for inter and final while continuing his articleship and the articleship period being reduced to a little less than 2 years instead of 3 years.
I hope by taking these steps the CA profession gets more charm than ever and than any other profession.
I wonder my blog being browsed by any council member and acting positively. A dream come true.
